Does it matter what type of red wine you drink for health benefits?
April 12, 2010
Yes, but only slightly. You’ll find more of the antioxidants that are being hyped so much nowadays in darker, more tannic red wines. That is, a Cabernet Sauvignon will do you a little tiny bit better than a Pinot Noir.
You get as much health benefit from the alcohol as you do from the antioxidants. Low-to-moderate drinking (a glass of wine or so a day) has been linked to a lowered risk for the following:
Strokes
Hypertension
Cardiac events (heart attacks)
Dementia
Certain forms of cancer
Really though, if you’re going to add red wine to your diet for it’s health benefits, drink something you like and realize that it’s not nearly as important as eating a lot of veggies and getting plenty of exercise.

Got something to say?

No. And in fact, you can drink 100% purple grape juice and get the same benefit without the alcohol
